ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2025, THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT Region VIII (DSWD-8) held its 5th redemption activity under the “Walang Gutom” program at the Barangay North Covered Court in Ormoc City. A total of 442 beneficiaries received food baskets worth PHP3,000.00 each, containing essential goods such as rice, vegetables, and other nutritious food. The initiative aims to address hunger and improve the nutrition of the communities in Ormoc City, as part of the government’s broader anti-poverty and food security efforts.
Accordingly, the DSWD partnered with local government units and community leaders to identify eligible beneficiaries. This collaboration ensures that the aid reaches those who need it most, particularly single parents and households classified as the “poorest of the poor.”
The “Walang Gutom” program is expected to continue in three years with additional redemption activities in other barangays and cities across the region, targeting more families in need. (By James Gadiano / EV Mail JAN. 13-19, 2025 issue)
