FROM RISK TO RELIEF: NEW CLASSROOMS FOR COGON CENTRAL SCHOOL. Students of Cogon Central School in Ormoc City now have access to safer, more spacious learning spaces, following the completion of a two-storey, six-classroom school building implemented by the Department of Public Works (DPWH) Leyte 4th District Engineering Office (DEO).

Covering a project area of 341 sq. m., the building was funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) 2024, with a contract cost of PHP14,850,370.15. It features modern facilities to support inclusive and health-conscious learning, including a Persons with Disabilities (PwD) ramp and PwD-friendly comfort rooms, handwashing stations, and a dedicated cistern.

Cogon Central School, which caters to over 800 learners, has long faced issues of classroom congestion and aging infrastructure. “When I first came here last 2022, it was evident that the school had Marcos-type buildings that were considered to be dilapidated and condemnable,”said School Principal Derle P. Romo. “Teachers were still handling classes despite the hazards that may occur.”

Romo shared that the completion of the building answers years of hope among the faculty. “For teachers, having a conducive learning environment will really benefit them. If the teachers are occupying a nice classroom, it will also entice the parents to enroll in the school,” she added.

With the upcoming school year, the newly-turned over facility is set to house higher grade level students, who had been using the older classrooms and represent a larger portion of the school’s population. (PR/ EV Mail APRIL 21-27, 2025 issue)
