TACLOBAN CITY – The National Committee on Geological Sciences has declared Biri Rocks in Biri, Northern Samar, a National Geological Monument on Wednesday (June 4).

Alongside the declaration was the official launching of Northern Samar as an Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark. The Biri Rock Formation is known for its exceptional geological characteristics, scientific importance, uniqueness, and natural beauty.

Governor Edwin Ongchuan expressed pride over what Northern Samar is capable of, with its geological, gastronomical, historic, and cultural wonders, as much as its archaeological and astronomical potential. In his message, the governor thanked the Provincial Government’s partners.
He likewise acknowledged the support of local communities, especially the people of Biri, fellow public servants, the Ibabao Festival Executive Committee led by Vice Governor Clarence Dato, and everyone else who has contributed to achieving the said milestone, adding, “Each has contributed a piece to the larger vision we are building – a vision of Northern Samar that is rooted in heritage, enriched by science, guided by history, flavored by culture, and open to the universe.”

“Let us continue to stand together as stewards of creation, as bearers of culture, and as proud Nortehanons,” the governor further said. (By Marie Tonette Marticio/EV Mail  June 2-8, 2025 issue)
