ORMOC CITY – The Philippine Carabao Center-Visayas State University (PCC-VSU) in collaboration with the Ormoc City Agriculture Department (CAD) successfully carried out a training to Ormocanon dairy buffaloes beneficiaries pertaining to the proper process of calving, which took place in the CAD conference room on December 11, 2024.
The said dairy buffaloes were turned over to a total of 18 members of the Ormoc City Cacao Farmers Association (OCCFA) on October 30, 2024. The said project is under the Coconut Carabao Development Project (CCDP).
According to Rolando Zalameda of PCC-VSU, a total of 48 female and 2 male dairy buffaloes were given to the said beneficiaries. Zalameda also shared that the beneficiaries also previously underwent a training on carabao management and silage-making for their carabaos and for selling purposes as another additional income. In the region, local government units that also benefitted the said program include Catubig, Carigara, Biliran, Naval, Basey, Maasin City, and Baybay City.
CCDP is a partnership project of DA-PCC and DA-Philippine Coconut Authority with the primary goal to providing additional income and generating livelihood opportunities to coconut farmers through carabao-based enterprises. The initiative is funded by the Office of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform chaired by Senator Cynthia Villar. To recall, on September 2020, PCA and PCC inked a memorandum of agreement for the CCDP implementation. (By Gwen Maurillo / EV Mail December 9-15, 2024 issue)
