TACLOBAN CITY – A 31-year-old farmer was killed after being accidentally shot by his companion when he was mistaken for a wild boar while hunting, Sunday (June 8), in Brgy. San Pedro, Jaro, Leyte.

Reports disclosed that the victim, along with alias “Rene,” and the suspect identified as “Perper,” 43, were hunting for wild boars in the mountainous area, around 15.7 kilometers from the town proper. To increase their chances of finding a target, the victim decided to split from the group. Shortly thereafter, Perper noticed movement in a grassy area and, believing it to be a wild boar, fired his homemade shotgun. To his shock, he later discovered that he had accidentally shot his companion, identified as “Jojo.”

The suspect immediately called for Rene to help bring the victim to the barangay proper. Jojo was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician at Carigara District Hospital.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to the responding personnel of Jaro Municipal Station. However, the homemade shotgun used in the incident was not recovered. (By Marie Tonette Marticio/EV Mail  JUNE 9-15, 2025 issue)
