TACLOBAN CITY – Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan signed the scholarship contract of 31 Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) scholars, Thursday ( February 27).
Accordingly, the nursing students are part of the pioneering batch of nursing scholars of the Provincial Government of Northern Samar. “We created this Nursing Scholarship Program to deserving nursing students, especially the poorest of the poor,” Governor Ongchuan shared.
The Nursing Scholarship Program ordinance was sponsored by Board Member Gilbert Layon. It is designed to help Nortehanon learners who are pursuing a nursing career and address the increasing need for health practitioners in public hospitals in the province.
Sheena Mae Ybañez, one of the nursing scholars and a first year nursing student of the University of Eastern Philippines, expressed her gratitude for the scholarship. She is a daughter of a solo parent public health worker in Catarman. “I will not waste this opportunity that will help me finish my studies,” she shared.
In 2020, the Provincial Government also started granting medical scholarships to increase the number of doctors in Northern Samar Provincial Hospital and District hospitals. (By Marie Tonette Marticio / EV Mail Feb. 24 – Mar. 2, 2025 issue)
