TACLOBAN CITY – To increase rice production in Northern Samar province, the provincial government partnered with TAO Corporation to focus on a large-scale rice project.

TAO Corporation has identified 500 hectares of potential land for rice production, particularly in the municipalities of Laoang, Mondragon, and Las Navas. With traditional rice varieties yielding 1-2 tons per hectare, the company plans to introduce hybrid rice capable of producing 8-9 tons per hectare.

The roll-out of the project is expected to begin in November 2024. Julio Sy, Jr., Chairman of Tao Foods Company, expressed optimism about the potential for Northern Samar to become a major contributor to the nation’s rice supply. “The Philippines is one of the world’s largest rice importers, but Northern Samar’s fertile lands and dedicated farmers present an incredible opportunity for local growth,” he said.

TAO Corporation aims to empower local farmers by providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to improve their enterprises and increase their profitability. By focusing on hybrid rice, local farmers are expected to see not only increased yields but also better market access and overall economic improvement.
