ORMOC CITY – May is National Heritage Month, and, thus, is the ideal time for Filipinos to celebrate their nation’s rich cultural heritage and embrace their shared responsibility in preserving it for future generations.
For this reason, this city of beautiful people will hold a “Paduwa Ormocanon 2025” which will take place at the Ormoc City Plaza from 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. on May 19, 2025. Hence, the Ormoc City Youth Development Office (CYDO) is calling all Ormocanon children and youth aged 10 to 25 to celebrate the country’s vibrant culture and rich heritage through exciting traditional Filipino games.
Accordingly, a total of ten (10) barangay clusters will compete in an epic showdown of skills, teamwork, and tradition during the said sports activity. The grand champion will receive PHP50,000; the second placer will receive PHP30,000; PHP20,000 for the third placer; and PHP10,000 as consolation prize.
To register, interested participants may connect with their Barangay Cluster Heads and submit the necessary requirements. Deadline is set on May 13, 4:00 in the afternoon.
The traditional Filipino games, or “Laro ng Lahi,” are being recognized for their potential in promoting indigenous culture and sports. These games, while facing challenges in maintaining popularity, offer benefits like improved social skills, emotional regulation, and cultural awareness.
Presidential Proclamation No. 439, which was signed in 2003, established May as National Heritage Month, as a reminder that the nation’s history offers important lessons and a way forward. The proclamation, accordingly, encourages public consciousness and support for preserving both tangible and intangible heritage. By Gwen Maurillo (EV Mail May 5-11, 2025 issue)
