TACLOBAN CITY – A soldier was killed, while three more soldiers were wounded, in an encounter against members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Tuesday (November 12) in Gamay, Northern Samar.
Corporal Benjie Tamor, a native of Dolores, Eastern Samar, and a member of the 52nd Infantry Battalion, paid the ultimate sacrifice during the encounter in an upland village of Brgy. Malidong, about seven kilometers from the town proper.
Captain Jefferson Mariano, 8th Infantry Division Public Affairs Officer, said Corporal Tamor and the three wounded soldiers are part of the blocking force following an encounter around 12 noon against the Regional Guerilla Unit of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee of the NPA. He added that the operation was launched because of the reported atrocities and extortion by the NPAs in the village.
Captain Mariano said the troops encountered about nine (9) NPA members, which they believe to have been wounded based on the blood stains in the encounter site.
The 8ID strongly condemns the death of Corporal Tamor, saying, “We express our condolences to the family and friends of Corporal Benjie Tamor. He paid the ultimate sacrifice while aiming for peace in Eastern Visayas. Rest assured that his act of heroism will not go be wasted.”
Meanwhile, the wounded soldiers are being treated in the hospital while follow-up operations are ongoing. (By Marie Tonette Marticio / EV Mail November 11-17, 2024 issue)
