TACLOBAN CITY – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Borongan City passed Resolution No. 59 in 2025, opposing destructive mining activities and calling on government agencies to safeguard the city’s environment, resources, and communities.
The said resolution aligns with City Mayor Dayan Agda’s firm opposition to any potential mineral mining activity in the city.

The local chief executive stated his sentiments in meetings that several areas in Borongan are now open for mining applications, as announced by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB). Said resolution urges the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-MGB and other relevant agencies to deny or revoke any permits or mining applications that threaten the ecological city’s integrity.
It further enjoins all barangays, civil society organizations, church groups, youth, and other stakeholders to “remain vigilant and united in protecting the natural environment of Borongan for the benefit of current and future generations.” (By Marie Tonette Marticio / EV Mail June 23-29, 2025 issue)
