ORMOC CITY – The men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard District-Eastern Visayas District (PCGDEV) warmly welcomed their newly installed District Commander, Captain Jonathan C. Marfil aboard the headquarters here in Ormoc City.

A Sideboys Honors Ceremony was rendered by CGDEV personnel as a time-honored naval tradition to welcome CAPT MARFIL aboard, symbolizing respect and recognition of his leadership.
He was received with full honors and courtesies, troop information and orientation briefing to provide him updates on CGDEV’s operational status, ongoing initiatives, and priority programs in the region. This ceremonial welcome also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the PCG-EV in pursuit of excellence in maritime safety, security, and humanitarian service under the guidance of CAPT MARFIL.
The entire command, accordingly, stands ready to support his leadership and continue upholding the core values of the Philippine Coast Guard—Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. During an interview with EV Mail this week, it was learned that prior to his assignment here, Marfil was based in the National Capital Region.
It was exactly when he assumed the position when the San Juanico Bridge started having problems and the PCG-EV needed to work along with other agencies. One such task, he said, is to facilitate the “queuing” of the trucks that use the ports in the Northern part of Leyte, including Ormoc City, going to Samar enroute to Luzon.
For the public experiencing these delays, PCG continues its mandate and assures everybody’s safety and security. Captain Marfil said that they have enough personnel if there is a need for additional deployment, adding, “Konting pasensya, ang Coast Guard ay sinisiguro ang kaligtasan ng mga pasahero at barko.” (By Josie Serseña / EV Mail  JULY 7-13, 2025 issue)
