TACLOBAN CITY – A police chief in Biliran province is facing homicide raps after shooting a drinking mate, Sunday (September 21), in Brgy. Balire, Tunga, Leyte.
The accused was identified as Captain Alberto Parena, 53, and a resident of Brgy. Abango, Barugo, Leyte. Meanwhile, the victim was identified as alias “Jonar,” 56, a farmer and resident of Brgy. Parag-um, Carigara, Leyte.
During a drinking session at the accused aunt’s house, the victim, reportedly intoxicated, unexpectedly pulled a short-bladed weapon called a “pisaw” from his waist and stabbed the suspect. The accused was able to escape and kept his distance. Fearing for his safety, he fired a warning shot at the victim. However, the victim continued to attack him, prompting Parena to defend himself by shooting the victim once, hitting him on the neck.
The accused rushed the victim to the hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Carigara District Hospital, Carigara, Leyte. Parena also surrendered to the authorities and turned over a caliber .9mm pistol which will be subjected to Micro-Etching and Ballistic Examination.
