ORMOC CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Ormoc responded to fire alarms in four (4) different barangays of said city during the official launch of Fire Prevention Month on March 4, 2024.

The first fire that was responded to was a grassfire that broke out in Sitio Kahayag, Barangay Macabug at 11:16 in the morning. BFP brought two fire trucks because the fire spread over one hectare of grassland.

The next alarm was in Purok 7, Sitio Esperanza, Barangay Concepcion where a warehouse owned by a Breccio Costa, 65, caught fire from a rubbish fire or burning garbage. Based on the investigation, Costa was burning garbage at 9:00 in the morning and left it when he thought there was no more fire.

However, he discovered that his warehouse, which was near the spot where he burned the waste, was already on fire when he arrived at 12:20 in the afternoon due to the strong wind and the high temperature. Fortunately, the fire was put out with the help of his neighbors, who doused the flaming portion of his warehouse with water. When the fire department arrived, they still bombarded it with water to make sure that no fire would spread again.

Meanwhile, at around 1:44 in the afternoon, another grassfire broke out in Barangay San Pablo, where there was an estimated damage of two hectares of grass. The fire department declared a fire out at 3:22 in the afternoon. Finally, the fourth fire alarm that the fire department responded to was another grassfire in Barangay Patag. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire incident. By Gwen Maurillo (EV Mail March 4-10, 2024 issue)
