TACLOBAN CITY – A 57-year-old farmer who was trying to stop an argument between a married couple was hacked to death by his drinking buddy, Thursday (July 6), in Villaba, Leyte.
The victim was identified as Rufino Mariquit, a resident of Sitio Upper, Brgy. Tabunoc of said town.
Accordingly, Mariquit and the suspect, Carlos Camugao, 60, were having a drinking session outside Camugao’s house.
Investigation disclosed that a heated argument ensued between the suspect and his live-in partner, Thelma Arnoco, who asked them to stop drinking. However, the suspect suddenly got a long-bladed weapon locally known as “sundang,” prompting Arnoco to run away from the suspect.
On the other hand, the victim approached the suspect to advise him but instead of heeding, the suspect hacked the victim multiple times hitting his neck, which resulted in his instantaneous death.
After that, the suspect brought the dead body of the victim to the riverbank where it was later discovered by the residents of the nearby village of Brgy. Cagnocot.
The murder weapon was also recovered at the house of the suspect during his arrest. By Marie Tonette Marticio (EV Mail July 3-9, 2023 issue)
